Who We Are & What We Do... The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 when three friends, Debbie Basile, Betti Ann Innes and Pat Smith of Babylon, Suffolk County, New York; two of them diagnosed with breast cancer, found they could no longer ignore the statistics. Determined to fight the disease by raising awareness and educating women about breast cancer, the BBCC, with its staff of dedicated volunteers, undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon.
From this early work grew a volunteer driven grass-roots organization that serves the entire Township of Babylon and now helps those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. The BBCC provides direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families. In additions to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer the BBCC also reaches out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community.

Lean On Me Breast Cancer Network Inc. was initially established as a New York State non-profit organization in May 2000 by Dr. Dwight DeRisi, Donna DeRisi, Sharon Pape, Ursula Thall, and Gerry Accardo. Its goal was to provide one on one peer support for women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer by pairing them with volunteer survivors from a physician's practice. To date, the Lean On Me peer support program has trained over eighty volunteers and has helped thousands of patients.
Since its inception, Lean On Me Breast Cancer Network Inc. has expanded its programs and services and now includes several forums for information and support.
Lean On Me Breast Cancer Network Inc. has been designed to provide patients and their families with access to a comprehensive set of resources, free of charge, in order to manage their diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. However, we know all too well that there is much more "inbetween" those three words, so our hope is to positively impact the overall quality of each patient's life.

Our mission is to promote awareness through education and community outreach; advocacy to increase funding for research into the causes of breast cancer, and for improved methods of detection and treatment; and assistance in securing access to screening, diagnosis, and treatment.
The Long Beach Breast Cancer Coalition was founded in 1992. In the Spring of 1992 a number of women were becoming concerned about what appeared to be a high incidence of breast cancer on Long Island. A meeting was held with our county legislator to discuss the concerns of women living in Long Beach. From that meeting it was resolved that we would work together with the goal of increasing awareness, and educating community members through informational seminars and programs. One of the first tasks of the LBBCC was completion of a breast cancer mapping survey to determine the incidence of breast cancer in Long Beach. That same year Coalition members participated in the first breast cancer walk on Washington and met with state legislators to request increased allocation of funds for breast cancer research. These first steps were the beginning of the LBBCC’s efforts to increase public awareness and focus on the issue of breast cancer on Long Island.
